Jang Geum became an orphan at a young age but rises to become the first and only female doctor to a king in Joseon history. She does this through hard work and honesty always refusing to use her skills to cause harm to anyone - even her enemies. A main theme of the story is to never use food or medicine as a weapon….
On her way back to the palace, JangGeum stops by the Royal library to drop off a letter for Jung, WoonBaek and encounters Min, JungHo. On the day she returns to the Royal kitchen, she starts preparing for the NaIn Qualification Exam.

Jang Geum consults with Dr Shin about Suk Won's symptoms. They realise she has high blood pressure and raise the alarm. The physician claims ignorance of the situation and gets demoted. and Jang Geum tells her not to use food or meds as a weapon again. ( a theme of the drama) Court lady Seong Geum witnesses Myeong Yi and Jang Geum at a market place while shopping and feels threatened by Myeong Yi's presence. Seong Geum and her brother, Pan Sool, plot to kill Myeong Yi. Jang Geum witnesses her mother's death and is spurned by a strong will to accomplish Myeong Yi's dying wish.
